Majalengka Day 236 : Real Steel

.

it's a story about battle robots

and Hugh Jackman not using his adamantinum claws (wait, that was another story)

Hugh Jackman was a loser with a truck and a very rusty (also destroyed) battle robot, Ambush. He lurked around stupid fairs to get in a fight, but all he got was a fight with a bull. Ambush was defeated easily when his attention was distracted by a very pretty girl in the spectator seat, and that defeat made him owed 20 thousands dollars to the MC of the fair. And he ran before paying...

shortly after, he was told his ex died and left an 11 year old boy, so he went straight to the court just to... sign the release of custody. Yes he's a sorry excuse for a father. But then later he found out a way to extort money from his ex's relative and the boy must be in his care for a little while. He used that money for a new robot, the Noisy Boy. With his son and the new robot, he entered an underground fight robot club and did a very lousy battle. Midas the chosen foe, a very weird robot with appearance like that of a Chronopolis guardian and a red mohawk had a very easy win against the supposedly unbeatable robot. Noisy boy was defeated pretty much because of Hugh's lousy pride and inability to master the combinations.

Noisy Boy the barehanded samurai bot, too bad...

with no money and robot, they had to break into the junkyard (no, seriously not DDS, they didn't find Sera in there) and look for scraps for a new robot. There was a little accident and voila, they found their new robot~ But how an 11 year old boy moved a 1000 pounds robot to the trolley by himself was beyond me. Maybe they need to throw that kid into the ring, just because lol. The new robot, Atom (no, seriously... never mind) was an old kind of sparring bot with huge defense and little attack point. There was also that shadow function, which was quite useful if the controller had some experience in the world of martial arts, or any other kind of battle technique. Fortunately, our dear Hugh was quite an experienced boxer before the world of robotic battle dominated America.

Atom, the battle robot with fencing mask. aren't you glad it wasn't dr Tenma's creation? lol

Add a little bonding time scenes between the lousy father and the cute stubborn son, also don't forget the newly found robot who dominated the underground battles and won continuously. Voila, it's fitted for a family movie, not a pure shounen movie. Also Dakota did a very cute dance with Atom (now if only that Atom was Tetsuwan Atom... wait, that would be weird...) before every battle, it was much like his trademark with the robot. I don't know why Hugh suggested that to his son, pedophiles exist even far in the future you know....

Just like every battle oriented movie, there was this goal of defeating a very powerful robot named Zeus. And oh god he's scary indeed. Dakota got into cocky mode after defeating Twin Cities in an undercard fight of World Robot Boxing and challenged that crazy robot openly (also he was mad that Zeus team wanted to buy Atom for his sparring function).

boy, they got the 'menacing' and 'intimidating' parts right, very right...

Don't forget that past sometimes can get caught of people, and yes Hugh's past caught him. remember that stupid MC of stupid fair who host that stupid fight between a robot and a bull? He kicked the daylight out of Hugh and took their money. This event suddenly made Hugh a better father and decided to return the kid to his rightful owner. And then after some mellow consultations with a very pretty robot engineer, he decided to do the final fight, Atom vs Zeus with his son. That's a very unusual father and son quality time.

The battle between Atom and Zeus was breathtaking indeed. I really sometimes held my breath for too long! And boy, Atom really could take a lot of damage, Zeus was way bigger and had better techniques, but Atom could made it even to the final round~ Those battle moves weren't awkward at all. Tak's frustration was funny. Also the ending was quite good, and im glad it wasn't a generic ending.

I was really waiting for Atom to suddenly had emotions, especially after a few of events hinting him to be somewhat different, but no, this wasn't that kind of movie...
